A green arrow is placed if the 3-day MA of the NH-NL index goes positive for three consecutive days, or a red arrow is placed if the MA goes negative for three consecutive days. To see a summation of the NH-NL numbers, click here. When a green buy arrow is put on the price chart, it indicates a Health 'buy alert', if the other indicators concur.

The following chart shows the S&P 500 and a 10-day moving average of the NH-NL indicator. I used the NH-NL indicator to confirm a traditional moving average trading system. I drew "buy" arrows when the S&P 500 rose above its 50-day moving average, but only if the 10-day moving average of the NH-NL indicator was above zero.

We have NYSE NH/NL data going back to 1980, and Nasdaq data going back not quite as far. We also have NYSE A-D data as modeled and described in the Excel file available on our Market Breadth Data page. Some data exist prior to 1980, but there is an interesting story about why the early data are not the same. NH-NL confirms trend when it rallies or falls in gear with the price. The construction of this index is very simple; all you need is the number of new 52 week Highs, and you subtract from it, the number of new 52 week Lows. This can than be plotted as a line or a histogram. The chart data is delayed 15-minutes, and the Highs/Lows page is updated every 10-minutes throughout the day. In addition, if the value shown on the chart is "0.01" this is used to represent a value of "0" as shown on the Highs/Lows page.
